Report on the progress of the borehole from Project Share
The borehole project at Project Share in Gushegu, Northern Ghana is progressing well. We sank the borehole in mid- May, at the end an uncommonly long dry season. This was really the best time of year to do this, as it means the borehole is definitely deep enough to provide water all year round.
The borehole was then mechanised using a submersible pump, and the site fenced for security.
The borehole was sunk just a few metres off our land close to our staff quarters (with the land owners permission), as this was the best place to site it. The water is then piped onto our land which is a common practice here.
We recently constructed a tall water tower with a large polytank on top to be the main water storage point. This is next to our staff quarters and office building so this tank can supply water directly to the staff quarters and also has a tap to be used by the local communities. The tank is high enough to create enough water pressure to pipe the water to Neesim Primary School and Neesim Nutrition Centre. The pipes have already been laid for this.
The next stage is to construct two smaller water towers with smaller polytanks, one at the school and one at the nutrition centre, which will then be connected to taps at each site. The smaller polytanks will ensure that there is always a store of water at each place, even when people from the local communities are fetching from the large tank, and the height will ensure good water pressure in the taps. We hope for the work to be completed by the end of August at the latest.
