CHETI’s Primary School is located in a rural community in Arusha
and educates over 530 students from local villages. All of the
children attending this school live in poverty. CHETI Primary School
ranks very highly in national exams and is a chance for students to
get out of the poverty cycle their families are trapped in.
In 2018 this school was massively oversubscribed. The high
demand meant that all classes were above the optimal capacity of
45 students. Grade 2 and 3 were in particular crisis; class sizes were
84 and 66 with 3 or 4 students often sharing one desk (desks are
suitable for 2 students), putting children’s education at risk.
The school needed to be expanded to allow for two classrooms per
year group. Therefore we needed to build 7 more classrooms by
2020 to accommodate 45 students in each, educating up to 315
children.
The Kitchen Table Charities Trust kindly agreed to fund £11,000
towards the costs of constructing 2 new classrooms, the third phase
of this expansion programme.
